Dr. (MH) Yakubu Tobor Yusuf, an alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has been appointed as Registrar of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council under the Ministry of Health.
This appointment marks a significant milestone in his career and signals Ghana’s deepening commitment to the integration of Traditional, Complementary, and Alternative Medicine (TCAM) into mainstream healthcare.
An authority in TCAM, Dr. Yusuf brings to the role a wealth of experience and a visionary approach to public health. His career has spanned leadership roles across some of Ghana’s most innovative medical centers. As Medical Director of Palza Medical Center (2023–2025), he led initiatives that significantly improved patient outcomes and streamlined healthcare operations. Earlier, at Kojach Medicare Clinic (2019–2023), he introduced transformative medication and service delivery models that raised clinical care standards.
From 2017 to 2019, he headed the Medical Department at Quantum Medical Centre, where he developed groundbreaking protocols to enhance healthcare delivery and optimize resources.
Dr. Yusuf is not only a healthcare professional but also a passionate social advocate. He founded the Hope For Her Foundation, which has provided skills training and scholarships to more than 50 young women from vulnerable communities. His advocacy on women’s health is reflected in his 2015 publication, A Painful Ordeal: The Tale of Female Genital Mutilation, which brought critical attention to gender-based health issues.
His academic path includes a Bachelor of Herbal Medicine from KNUST, further specialized training at the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine in Mampong (2015–2016), and clinical training at Tetteh Quarshie Hospital (2015–2017). A thought leader, Dr. Yusuf has authored widely read commentaries such as DNA Testing: Lest We Forget (Citinewsroom, 2021) and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Association of Medical Physiotherapists’ newsletter.
Dr. Yusuf’s leadership roots trace back to his student days. He was elected Republic Hall President at KNUST for the 2013/14 academic year and later served as President of the National Health Students Association of Ghana (NAHSAG), where he helped influence policy and advocate for student health reforms.
In addition to his new role, Dr. Yusuf currently serves as a Board Member of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), contributing to the oversight of pharmaceutical and herbal medicinal products to safeguard public health nationwide.
Dr. Yusuf’s appointment as Registrar positions him to lead national efforts in professionalizing traditional medicine, ensuring regulatory compliance, and advancing integrative healthcare models that respect both indigenous knowledge and scientific standards.
